German Reflexive Pronouns
Use mich, mir, sich and friends correctly, decide between accusative and dative, and put the pronoun in the right place.
A reflexive pronoun points back to the subject: 'myself', 'yourself'. German uses them far more often than English, with verbs like sich freuen or sich beeilen.
Only ich and du have two different forms. Everywhere else the choice is easy.
What reflexive pronouns do
The subject and the object are the same person. Many German verbs need a reflexive pronoun where English has none.
Ich freue mich auf das Wochenende.
I'm looking forward to the weekend.
Setz dich doch!
Do sit down!
Accusative and dative forms
The forms match the personal pronouns, except that er, sie, es, sie and Sie all use sich. Sich is never capitalised, not even with Sie.
Accusative
- ichmich
- dudich
- er / sie / essich
- wiruns
- ihreuch
- sie / Siesich
Dative
- ichmir
- dudir
- er / sie / essich
- wiruns
- ihreuch
- sie / Siesich
Accusative or dative?
- No other object in the sentence: accusative (mich, dich).
- Another accusative object: dative (mir, dir).
- Typical with body parts and clothes.
- Some verbs always take dative: sich etwas vorstellen.
Ich wasche mich.
I'm washing (myself).
Ich wasche mir die Hände.
I'm washing my hands.
Zieh dir eine Jacke an, es ist kalt!
Put a jacket on, it's cold!
Where the pronoun goes
In a main clause it comes right after the verb, or after a subject pronoun that follows the verb. In a subclause it comes right after a subject pronoun.
Morgen treffen wir uns vor dem Kino.
Tomorrow we're meeting in front of the cinema.
Ich glaube, dass er sich verlaufen hat.
I think he's got lost.

Questions learners ask
When do you use mich and when mir?
Use mich when there's no other object (Ich wasche mich). Use mir when there is another accusative object (Ich wasche mir die Hände).
Is it Sie sich or Sie Sich?
Always lower-case sich. Only Sie, Ihnen and Ihr are capitalised in the formal address.
What is the difference between sich and selbst?
Sich is the grammatical reflexive pronoun. Selbst adds emphasis, meaning 'myself/himself, without help': Er repariert das Auto selbst.
