German Negation: nicht and kein
Negate any sentence: pick nicht or kein, place nicht correctly and use noch nicht, nicht mehr and doch.
German has two main ways to say 'not': kein for nouns and nicht for everything else.
Kein is easy once you know ein. Nicht takes a little more practice, because its position changes the meaning.
kein for nouns, nicht for the rest
Use kein before a noun that would otherwise have ein or no article. Use nicht for verbs, adjectives, names and nouns with der, die, das.
Ich habe kein Auto.
I don't have a car.
Das Essen ist nicht warm.
The food isn't warm.
kein takes the ein endings
Kein declines exactly like ein. Unlike ein, it also has a plural.

Where nicht goes
- Whole sentence: nicht at the end, before final verb parts
- After time words and objects: heute nicht, das Buch nicht
- Before adjectives, manner and places: nicht gut, nicht hier
- Only one part: nicht directly before that part
Ich komme heute nicht.
I'm not coming today.
Sie kann nicht schwimmen.
She can't swim.
Wir wohnen nicht in Berlin.
We don't live in Berlin.
Nicht ich, sondern mein Bruder hat angerufen.
It wasn't me who called but my brother.

nicht comes after the verb, here at the end.
