German Future Tense (Futur I)

Form the Futur I with werden, know when the present tense is enough and use werden for guesses.

German forms the future with werden in position 2 and the infinitive at the end. But in everyday speech, the present tense plus a time word is often all you need.

werden is most useful for predictions, promises and guesses about the present.

werden + infinitive at the end

Conjugate werden and put the infinitive at the very end of the clause.

  • Main clause: werden in position 2, infinitive last
  • Subclause: infinitive, then werden at the very end
  • With a modal: Ich werde arbeiten müssen.

Present tense of werden

  • ichwerde
  • duwirst
  • er/sie/eswird
  • wirwerden
  • ihrwerdet
  • sie/Siewerden
  • Ich werde nächstes Jahr in Spanien studieren.

I'm going to study in Spain next year.

  • Es wird morgen regnen.

    It's going to rain tomorrow.

  • Ich glaube, dass sie die Prüfung bestehen wird.

I think she'll pass the exam.

Present tense for plans

When a time word makes the future clear, Germans normally use the present tense. It sounds more natural than werden.

  • Time words: morgen, heute Abend, am Wochenende, nächste Woche
  • Arrangements and timetables: present tense
  • Wir besuchen euch am Wochenende.

We'll visit you at the weekend.

  • Nächste Woche fange ich einen neuen Job an.

I'm starting a new job next week.

Promises, predictions and guesses

werden adds certainty or intention. With wohl or schon, it expresses a guess about the present.

  • Ich werde dich nie vergessen.

    I'll never forget you.

  • Er wird wohl noch im Büro sein.

He's probably still at the office.

  • Keine Sorge, das wird schon klappen.

    Don't worry, it'll work out.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Es will morgen regnen.

    ✓ Es wird morgen regnen.

    wollen means 'want', not 'will'.

  • ✗ Ich werde gehen morgen ins Kino.

✓ Ich werde morgen ins Kino gehen.

The infinitive goes to the end.

  • ✗ Du werdest das schaffen.

    ✓ Du wirst das schaffen.

werden is irregular: du wirst, er wird.

Questions learners ask

Do Germans really use the future tense?

Less than English speakers do. For plans with a time word, the present tense is the default; werden is for predictions, promises and emphasis.

Does German 'will' mean the future?

No. Ich will is from wollen and means 'I want'. The English future 'will' is werden: Er wird kommen means 'He will come'.

How do I say 'going to' in German?

There is no separate form. Use the present with a time word (Ich koche heute Abend) or werden for predictions.
