German Present Tense

Learn the six endings, spot stem changes and use one tense for now, habits and plans.

The German present tense (Präsens) covers English 'I work', 'I am working' and often 'I will work'. You build it from the verb stem plus six endings.

Most verbs follow one pattern. A group of strong verbs also changes its vowel in the du and er/sie/es forms.

Stem plus ending

Remove -en (or -n) from the infinitive to get the stem, then add the ending for the person.

Present tense of machen

  • ichmache
  • dumachst
  • er/sie/esmacht
  • wirmachen
  • ihrmacht
  • sie/Siemachen
  • Ich mache heute Pasta.

    I'm making pasta today.

  • Wohnt ihr in Berlin?

    Do you live in Berlin?

Stems ending in -t or -d

Add an extra -e- before -st and -t so the ending can be heard.

  • Also after consonant + n: du öffnest, er rechnet
  • Stems in -s, -ß, -z: du only adds -t (du tanzt)

Present tense of arbeiten

  • icharbeite
  • duarbeitest
  • er/sie/esarbeitet
  • wirarbeiten
  • ihrarbeitet
  • sie/Siearbeiten
  • Sie arbeitet in einer Bäckerei.

    She works in a bakery.

  • Du findest deinen Schlüssel nie.

    You never find your key.

Vowel changes in du and er/sie/es

Many strong verbs change their stem vowel, but only in the du and er/sie/es forms. The plural forms keep the infinitive vowel.

Common stem-changing verbs

  • fahren (a → ä)du fährst, er fährtdrive, go
  • schlafen (a → ä)du schläfst, er schläftsleep
  • sprechen (e → i)du sprichst, er sprichtspeak
  • essen (e → i)du isst, er issteat
  • lesen (e → ie)du liest, er liestread
  • sehen (e → ie)du siehst, er siehtsee
  • Mein Bruder fährt jeden Tag mit dem Rad.

    My brother cycles every day.

  • Liest du gern Krimis?

Do you like reading crime novels?

Now, habits and the near future

German has no separate -ing form, so 'Ich koche' means both 'I cook' and 'I am cooking'. With a time word, the present also talks about the future.

  • Stress 'right now' with gerade
  • Future plans: present tense + morgen, bald, nächste Woche
  • Ongoing since the past: present tense + seit
  • Wir fliegen morgen nach Wien.

    We're flying to Vienna tomorrow.

  • Ich lerne seit zwei Jahren Deutsch.

I've been learning German for two years.

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Ich bin lernen Deutsch.

    ✓ Ich lerne Deutsch.

German has no 'to be + -ing' form.

  • ✗ Er fahrt nach Hause.

    ✓ Er fährt nach Hause.

    fahren changes a to ä in er/sie/es.

  • ✗ Du arbeitst zu viel.

    ✓ Du arbeitest zu viel.

Stems ending in -t need an extra -e-.

  • ✗ Ich habe hier seit drei Jahren gewohnt.

✓ Ich wohne hier seit drei Jahren.

Ongoing situations with seit take the present tense.

Questions learners ask

Does German have a present continuous?

No. Use the simple present, and add gerade if you want to stress that something is happening right now.

Can I use the present tense for the future?

Yes, whenever a time word makes the future clear: Ich rufe dich morgen an. In speech this is more common than werden.

Which verbs change their vowel in the present?

Only certain strong verbs, and only in the du and er/sie/es forms. The wir, ihr and sie forms keep the vowel of the infinitive.
