German Subjunctive II (Konjunktiv II)
Form the Konjunktiv II, make polite requests, talk about wishes and build 'if' sentences about unreal situations.
The Konjunktiv II is the German 'would' mood: for things that aren't real, for wishes and for polite requests. Most verbs simply use würde + infinitive.
A handful of very common verbs have their own one-word forms: wäre, hätte, könnte, müsste, sollte.
würde + infinitive
würde goes in position 2 and the infinitive goes to the end, just like the future with werden.

wäre, hätte and the modal verbs
sein, haben and the modal verbs almost never use würde. Their Konjunktiv II comes from the Präteritum, usually with an umlaut added.
- Also common: es gäbe, ich wüsste, ich käme
- sollte and wollte look exactly like the Präteritum

Polite requests
Konjunktiv II makes requests softer. It's the standard tone in shops, restaurants and emails.

Wishes and if-clauses
wenn + Konjunktiv II describes an unreal condition, with the verb at the end of the wenn clause. For the past, use hätte or wäre + participle.
- Present: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.
- Past: Wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, wäre ich gekommen.
- Wish: Wenn ich nur mehr Geld hätte!
Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich ein Haus am Meer kaufen.
If I were rich, I'd buy a house by the sea.
Wenn du früher gekommen wärst, hättest du Anna getroffen.
If you'd come earlier, you'd have met Anna.
Ich wünschte, ich könnte besser kochen.
I wish I could cook better.

haben uses hätte, not würde haben.

Yes, historically it is the Konjunktiv II of mögen. Today it works as a polite 'would like' and behaves like a normal modal verb.
How do I say 'would have' in German?
