Haben Conjugation in German
Conjugate haben in the present and past and use everyday phrases like Ich habe Hunger with confidence.
haben means "to have". It's almost regular, but du hast and er hat drop the b.
It also builds the perfect tense and appears in many phrases where English uses "to be".
Present tense: habe, hast, hat
Only du and er/sie/es are irregular. Everything else follows the normal pattern.

In speech, Germans usually say hatte rather than hat gehabt. The ich and er/sie/es forms are the same.

Set phrases with haben
Many feelings and states are nouns in German, so you "have" them. English often says "be" instead.

haben as a helper verb
Most verbs form the perfect with haben + past participle at the end. haben takes position 2.
Er hat eine Pizza bestellt.
He ordered a pizza.
Wir haben den ganzen Tag gearbeitet.
We worked all day.

Use hatte; a participle would go last.
Questions learners ask
What is the past tense of haben?
The simple past is hatte: ich hatte, du hattest, wir hatten. It's more common in speech than the perfect hat gehabt.
Why do Germans say "Ich habe Hunger"?
Hunger, Durst and Angst are nouns in German, so you have them. Ich bin hungrig also exists, but Ich habe Hunger is what people say.
Is it "recht haben" or "Recht haben"?
Both spellings are allowed. Lowercase recht haben is the more common one today.
