Sein or Haben in German
Know when German says haben where English says "be", and talk about age, hunger, fear and feeling cold naturally.
English uses "to be" for many physical states and feelings. German often turns them into nouns and uses haben instead.
Feeling cold or bored works differently again: German says "to me it is cold".
haben where English says "be"
Hunger, thirst, fear and luck are nouns in German, so you have them. No article is needed.

Age: always sein
Say your age with sein, just like in English. Never use haben + Jahre.
- Ich bin 30. or Ich bin 30 Jahre alt.

Meine Tochter ist sieben.

Mir ist kalt: how your body feels
For feeling cold, hot, sick or bored, use a dative pronoun + ist + adjective. Ich bin kalt would describe your personality.

Past tense: a separate question
Choosing sein or haben for the perfect tense is a different rule. Verbs of movement and change take sein: Ich bin gefahren.
Ich bin nach Hause gegangen.
I went home.
Am Sonntag haben wir lange geschlafen.
We had a lie-in on Sunday.

Say Ich habe Hunger. Ich bin hungrig is grammatically correct but sounds more formal or bookish.
How do you say "I'm cold" in German?
Say Mir ist kalt. Ich bin kalt means you're an emotionally cold person.
Why is it "mir ist" and not "ich bin"?
German treats the feeling as something happening to you, so the person goes in the dative. The verb is always ist.
