German Ordinal Numbers
Form ordinal numbers with -te and -ste, use them in dates, and add the right adjective ending.
Ordinal numbers add -te up to 19 and -ste from 20 on. In writing, a dot after the digit marks an ordinal: 3. means dritte.

- Irregular: erste, dritte, siebte, achte.
- 1–19 add -te.
- 20 and above add -ste.

Endings like an adjective
An ordinal is an adjective, so it takes adjective endings. After der, die or das the ending is -e or -en.
Die zweite Straße links ist die Goethestraße.
The second street on the left is Goethestraße.
Am ersten Tag war ich sehr nervös.
On the first day I was very nervous.
Ordinals in dates
Dates always use ordinals. Say der dritte Mai for the date and am dritten Mai for 'on'.

Why is there a dot after numbers in German dates?
The dot turns the digit into an ordinal. 3. Mai is read der dritte Mai.
Is it siebte or siebente?
Both are correct, but siebte is the standard today. Siebente sounds old-fashioned.
