Aus vs Von in German
Say where you're from and where you're coming back from, choosing aus or von with one simple mirror rule.
English has one word, 'from'; German has two. aus means out of something, von means from a person or a starting point.
Both always take the dative, so the only question is which one fits.
aus: out of, where you're from
Use aus for origin (country, city) and for coming out of an enclosed space. Think of it as 'out of' a country, building or container.
Ich komme aus Irland.
I'm from Ireland.
Sie kommt gerade aus der Dusche.
She's just coming out of the shower.
Er trinkt Tee aus einer großen Tasse.
He drinks tea out of a big mug.
von: from a person or a starting point
- From a person: ein Brief von Oma.
- From a starting point: von Köln nach Bonn.
- Back from an appointment or open place: vom Arzt, vom Strand.
- Also 'of' and 'by': ein Freund von mir.
Die Blumen sind von meinem Freund.
The flowers are from my boyfriend.
Der Zug fährt von Köln nach Bonn.
The train goes from Cologne to Bonn.
Ich komme gerade vom Arzt.
I've just come from the doctor's.
The mirror rule
Match 'from' to the 'to': if you go in or nach, you come back aus. If you go zu or auf, you come back von.

Do aus and von take the same case?
Yes, both always take the dative. von dem contracts to vom; aus has no contraction.
Why is it 'von der Arbeit' and not 'aus der Arbeit'?
You go zur Arbeit, so you come back von der Arbeit. If you mean the building, aus dem Büro works too.
Is it 'aus Berlin' or 'von Berlin'?
For where you're from, it's aus Berlin. von Berlin is for a journey's starting point: von Berlin nach Prag.
