German Prepositions of Time
Say when things happen with um, am and im, and talk about periods with seit, vor, in, ab and bis.
English uses at, on and in for time; German uses um, am and im. The pattern is simple once you see which kind of time each one covers.
For periods of time, seit, vor and in do the work of 'for', 'ago' and 'in', all with the dative.
um, am, im: the big three
Use um for clock times, am for days and parts of the day, im for months and seasons. am and im are short for an dem and in dem.

Questions learners ask
How do I say 'ago' in German?
Put vor before the time, with the dative: vor drei Tagen. Unlike English 'ago', it never goes after the time.
Is it 'am Nacht' or 'in der Nacht'?
It's in der Nacht. The other parts of the day use am: am Morgen, am Nachmittag, am Abend.
What's the difference between seit and ab?
seit looks back to a starting point in the past: seit Montag. ab looks forward from a starting point: ab Montag means from Monday on.
