Telling Time in German
Ask Wie spät ist es?, tell the time the everyday and the official way, and never misread halb again.
Germans use two systems: the official 24-hour clock (14:30 = vierzehn Uhr dreißig) and an everyday style with Viertel and halb.
The biggest trap: halb neun means 8:30, not 9:30.
Asking the time
- Wie spät ist es? – What time is it?
- Wie viel Uhr ist es? – same meaning.
- Um wie viel Uhr …? – At what time …?
- Use um for a clock time: um 8 Uhr.
Wie spät ist es? – Es ist zehn Uhr.
What time is it? – It's ten o'clock.

halb: half TO the next hour
halb looks forward: halb neun is half an hour before nine, so 8:30.

Viertel, nach and vor
Near the full hour, count with nach and vor. Near the half hour, many people count from halb.
- Regional: Viertel neun = 8:15, drei viertel neun = 8:45.

Timetables, the radio and appointments use the 24-hour clock. Say the hour, then Uhr, then the minutes.

- Stunde is a length of time: drei Stunden.
- Drop Uhr with nach, vor and halb.

7:45, used in parts of southern and eastern Germany and in Austria. Elsewhere people say Viertel vor acht.
