German Irregular Verbs
Spot the three vowel changes, know exactly which forms they hit and conjugate the most common strong verbs correctly.
Irregular (strong) verbs use the normal present-tense endings, but many change their stem vowel.
The good news: the change only happens in two forms, du and er/sie/es.
Only du and er/sie/es change
The vowel changes in the du and er/sie/es forms. Every other form keeps the vowel of the infinitive.

Small traps in spelling
- nehmen doubles the m: du nimmst, er nimmt.
- halten adds no -t: er hält.
- Stems in -s or -ß add only -t: du liest, du isst.
- ihr never changes: ihr fahrt, ihr esst.

Do you take milk in your coffee?
Er hält den Kaffee in der Hand.
He's holding the coffee in his hand.
Not every strong verb changes now
Many strong verbs keep their vowel in the present and only change in the past, like gehen, kommen, trinken and finden. Learn the du/er form together with the infinitive.

He comes home at eight.
Trinkst du Tee oder Kaffee?
Do you drink tea or coffee?

Questions learners ask
Which German verbs change their vowel in the present tense?
Only certain strong verbs, and there is no rule to predict them. Learn the er form with each new verb: fahren, fährt; geben, gibt; sehen, sieht.
Are irregular verbs and strong verbs the same thing?
Mostly. Strong verbs change their vowel in the past and participle, and some also in the present; sein, haben and werden are irregular in their own ways.
Does the vowel change in the ihr form?
No. Only du and er/sie/es change, so it's ihr fahrt, ihr esst, ihr lest.
