German Regular Verbs

Find the stem, add the right ending and conjugate any regular verb in the present tense without a table.

Most German verbs are regular (also called weak): the stem never changes, only the ending does.

Learn one pattern with machen and you can conjugate wohnen, lernen, kaufen and hundreds more.

Stem + ending

Drop -en from the infinitive to get the stem, then add the ending that matches the subject. The wir and sie/Sie forms look exactly like the infinitive.

Present tense of machen

  • ichmache
  • dumachst
  • er · sie · esmacht
  • wirmachen
  • ihrmacht
  • sie · Siemachen

The endings

  • ich-e
  • du-st
  • er · sie · es-t
  • wir-en
  • ihr-t
  • sie · Sie-en
  • Ich mache heute Pasta.

    I'm making pasta today.

  • Wohnst du in Berlin?

    Do you live in Berlin?

Stems ending in -t or -d

If the stem ends in -t or -d, add an extra -e before -st and -t so the ending can be heard. The same happens with stems like öffn- and rechn-.

Present tense of arbeiten

  • icharbeite
  • duarbeitest
  • er · sie · esarbeitet
  • wirarbeiten
  • ihrarbeitet
  • sie · Siearbeiten
  • Sie arbeitet in einer Bäckerei.

    She works in a bakery.

  • Wartest du auf den Bus?

Are you waiting for the bus?

  • Es regnet schon wieder.

    It's raining again.

Stems ending in -s, -ß, -z

When the stem already ends in an s-sound, the du form only adds -t. So du and er/sie/es look the same.

du forms

  • tanzendu tanztto dance
  • reisendu reistto travel
  • heißendu heißtto be called
  • putzendu putztto clean
  • Wie heißt du?

    What's your name?

  • Du tanzt wirklich gut!

    You dance really well!

Verbs ending in -eln and -ern

  • Stem is the infinitive minus -n: wander-, sammel-.
  • wir and sie/Sie add only -n: wir wandern.
  • -eln verbs usually drop the e in ich: ich sammle.
  • Wir wandern jeden Sonntag.

    We go hiking every Sunday.

  • Ich sammle alte Postkarten.

    I collect old postcards.

Questions learners ask

What is a regular verb in German?

A regular (weak) verb keeps the same stem vowel in every form. You only add endings, and its past participle ends in -t (gemacht).

Why is it du arbeitest but du machst?

Without the extra -e, arbeitst would be hard to pronounce. Stems ending in -t or -d always add it before -st and -t.

Are the wir and sie forms always the same as the infinitive?

Yes, for every verb except sein (wir sind). That makes them the easiest forms to get right.
